Description

APS SHOW 3 RING DITCHES, INCLUDING 1 WITH 2 CONCENTRIC RINGS, & 2 IRREGULAR ENCLOSURES (B1). FEATURES DESCRIBED & PLOTTED (B2). FEATURES PLOTTED FROM AVAILIABLE AP'S AT 1:2500 (NMR METHOD)(B3). RCHME REPORT ON THAMES VALLEY AP MAPPING PROJECT (B5).

Field walking undertaken by Marlow Archaeological Society in 1999/2000 produced a concentration of finds along the northern edge of the field, consisting of some 123 flint implement, 2 cores, and some 487 sherds of pottery and other metal finds (B6). In 2001 Marlow Archaeological Society conducted a resistivity survey on two of the ring ditches and investigated an area to the SW where the presence of the edge of a palaeochannel was possible detected. Three evaluation trenches were opened. Trench 1 (2m x 2m) in the north of the site was opened to test the depth of the overburden and nature of the underlying geology. 93 waste and worked flakes were recovered together with 6 core nodules and 1 burnt flint. Trench 2 (2m x 2m) was located between the ring dicth features and was dug to check the depth of the overburden. 14 waste flakes and 2 worked points were recovered together with 55gm of burnt flint. Trench 3 (1m x 5.6m) was dug at a point of high resistivity at a junction between two gravel terraces. 5 flint artefacts were recovered (B7).

In 2002, CAS 1161:01 had a small trench re-opened across the possible ditch feature which was shown to have been truncated by ploughing and was 2m wide by 1m deep. It appears to be u-shaped and have two phases of backfilling or a possible recut. Worked flint and contemporary building material was identified in the fills which were disturbed from the previous year's excavation (B8).

Further geophysical surveys and trial trenching carried out by Marlow Archaeological Society in 2003 to consolidate previous surveys and investigate the N edge of a possible gravel island. Magnetometry identified 2 circular anomalies, possibly ring ditches, 1 of which is double-ditched and 2 sub-rectangular ditched anomalies, probably small ditched enclosures. The trial trench apparently confirmed the presence of the edge of a palaeochannel (B13).

Further fieldwalking by Marlow Archaeological society in 2004 identified discrete concentrations of flint debitage and tools, interpreted as flint-working areas and burnt and cracked flints interpreted as cooking areas. Resistivity survey identified an extended sub-rectangular ditched enclosure aligned NW-SE, apparently associated with Barrow 'D'

In 2002, Marlow Archaeological Society conducted a resistivity survey on two of the ring ditches and investigated an area to the SW where the presence of the edge of an old water channel was possible detected. CAS 116101 had a small trench placed across the possible ditch feature which was shown to have been truncated by ploughing and 2m wide by 1m deep. It appears to be u-shaped and have two phases of backfilling or a possibly recut.

In 1998, a watching brief was undertaken during the digging of service trenches in the yard behind the street frontage. The trench was 0.7m wide and up to 0.9m deep. The watching brief identified a cess pit deposit and cultivated garden soil. The finds might suggest a pharmaceutical origin. Wall and floros sectiosn appeared to be from the buildings visible on the OS 1st Ed. A barrel-vaulted brick drain dating from the 19th century was also uncovered (5). In 1999, a small excavation was carried out on land at the rear of No 76 High Street prior to redevelopment. Cultivation soil was identified containing pottery dating from the 1200-1500 AD. However it also included material up to the 20th century. Three seperate stretches of shallow and poorly contructed chalk and flint wall footings were recorded, and believed to represent either an entrance or a passage/alley between two buildings. Truncating the wall

19th century gardens mentioned by Sheahan. The first and second edition 6" OS maps show nothing of specific

interest. Recent AP's show the gardens, however there is little detail visible (B3)

An archaeological evaluation undertaken in advance of development identified a ditch which was thought to be

associated with the 19th century garden landscaping. Additional excavation work explored the paleochannel and

gravel river terrace located to the west of the site, and found 8 struck flints and 1 sherd of Bronze Age pottery

Description

In November 1995, the Hertfordshire Archaeoligical Trust carried out an evaluation on land to the rear fo Remnantz

in advance of re-development. The site lies partially on a gravel terrace overliying the deep alluvium of a former

river channel. Using a mechanical excavator, thirteen trial trenches between 10-40m long and 2m wide were opened.

Two additional small trenches were opened to trace the line of a buried ditch. Archaeological features relating to the

post-med period were present in trenches 6, 9 and 10. Trench 6 revealed a 18-19th century pit and ditch 20m long

with vertical sides approximately 1.1m deep, with some wet timber at the base. Possibly asociated with a fishpond?

Trench 9 produced a post-medieval ditch forming part of the boundary. Trench 10 produced various post medieval

features, pottery, clay pipe, etc. Trench 2 produced 7 struck flints and 1 Bronze Age sherd. The trenches revealed

the marked changes in level from the gravel terrace to the deep alluvial deposits, and flint artefacts were recoverd

near the edge of the former channel from a layer immediately above the natural gravel and sealed below a dark

brown silty loam subsoil (1).

Further work was carried out to explore the area of the earlier bank of the Thames. A 5m x 15m trench was

excavated at the southern end of evaluation Trench 2. The ancient land surface was found to have ben incorporated

into a prehistoric ploughsoil with sparse prehistoric artefactual reamins (struck flint and pottery). No cut features

In July 2002, Marlow Archaeological Society initiated a fieldwalking exercise in advance of the further housing

development. Roman and later coins, plus musket balls had been found previously. Fieldwalking carried out

immediately after ploughing. Finds identified were mostly post-medieval, with a small scatter of probable Iron Age

and Romano-British pottery and tile. NGR to approximate location of Roman and Iron Age coins (1). Further

fieldwork in October 2003 only recorded 18th century and later finds (B2).

Description

Timber-framed barn, possibly built in late 18th century, with oak frame, brick plinth, weatherboard cladding and roof

of clay tiles, probably replacing thatch. The floors are generally of beaten earth, although the centre bay has some

timber flooring. Barn measures 13.5m X 6m and is of 3 bays with a brick-built rear cart bay and other later additions.

The internal frames are almost of cruck form, with the principal rafters springing from the main beam and terminating

on a high level collar. The barn appears to be the oldest building of a group of farm buildings comprising the main

farmhouse, sheds and outbuildings, probably built in the mid to late 19th century. See report for condition survey
