OBJECTIVE
To ascertain strata so that this may be related to the data from the Env. Agency trench on Bell Rope and the OAU excavation on Riverdene.
To check for the existence, size and position of the creek or inlet suggested by the resistivity survey (feature 2).
If possible to obtain material that can be dated and biological material that may indicate what was going on in the vicinity.
Set out end pegs F2/A0 and F2/A9 using EDM from GCP B.
Take EDM levels from GCP B along auger line at no less than 5 m intervals to obtain surface profile.
At each position lift small area of turf and clear small hole to remove surface material and avoid contaminating samples.
At intervals of close to 5 m along line, run down auger bore as far as practical using 2.5" auger and extensions. Record distance of bore from F2/A0 (not accumulative)
Record each strata as revealed, by depth from surface.
Take soil samples from each strata/layer and store in sealed plastic bags. To be identified by bore number and depth.
Significant biological material, carbon etc. to be placed in sterile lab pots.
Finds/shards to be carefully recorded as to depth and strata, placed in appropriate container, numbered plus bore number and depth and recorded on find sheet.
Selected soil and biological sample to be kept in a freezer until analysed.
F2/A3 and F2/A4 are approximately in the centre of the suspected channel. Effort is to be made on these two to reach the bottom of the channel and to obtain good samples.
